Safety and security
Most visits to the continent make for enjoyable and trouble-free holidays. However, there are a few particular dangers of which you should be aware.
Do not stop for anyone who suggests there is a problem with your vehicle. Proceed instead to the next service area to inspect it for yourself. If you do stop, do not leave the keys in the ignition and do keep your doors locked. Guard your valuables, especially at motorway services. Do not leave bags, passports or other valuables on view.
According to some reports, some outfits parked on service stations have been broken into while their owners are fast asleep, apparently after a gas has been fed into the unit. The Club does not recommend service areas or lay-bys, whether on motorways or on other roads, as safe places in which to spend the night.
